Pediatric audiometry is the practice of evaluating hearing ability in children using specialized tests and techniques tailored to the developmental stages of young patients. By conducting these tests in a child-friendly manner, audiologists can identify hearing issues that may impact speech, language development and overall cognitive growth. Early detection through pediatric audiometry is crucial for providing appropriate treatments and enabling children to thrive academically and socially.
Conditioned Play Audiometry
Conditioned play audiometry is a hearing test often used for children between ages two and five. During the test, the child is trained to respond to sounds through play-based activities, such as placing a block in a bucket when a tone is heard.
Parents can bring familiar small toys or comfort items to the appointment keep the child relaxed. Planning to have both parents or an additional caregiver present can also be beneficial, since this allows one person to comfort the child while the other interacts with the audiologist.
Visual Reinforcement Audiometry
Visual reinforcement audiometry is typically used for children ages six months to two years. This test utilizes visual stimuli like animated toys or lights to encourage infants to turn their heads toward the source of a sound. The child needs to sit still, usually on a caregiver’s lap, for the duration of the test.
It is helpful to schedule the appointment when the child is usually awake and alert, avoid nap times if possible and bring along soothing items such as a favorite blanket or toy. Having a second caregiver present can also ease the process, helping to maintain the child’s focus and ensuring a more accurate assessment.
